Product Review | Huda Beauty Complexion Perfection Pre-Makeup Base ($35, Sephora)

Product Details (from Sephora's website): A hydrating makeup base that creates a smooth canvas while gripping makeup and moisturizing the skin.   The silky-smooth formula of the Complexion Perfection Pre-Makeup Base works to visibly blur the appearance of pores and fine lines, and it smooths the skin for a fresher, longer-lasting, and more flawless makeup look. This pre-makeup base harnesses the benefits of dimethicone, known for its protecting and moisturizing properties, as well as rosehip oil which is known to be high in antioxidants and highly nourishing for the skin. Together, these ingredients both hydrate and soothe the skin with a creamy formula. The Complexion Perfection can also be used as a lightweight moisturizer to leave skin soft and nourished without feeling oily.

Review:  Isn't it sad that I am using a stock photo on this review? It's because it did not take me long to return the primer to Sephora.  I purchased both the full size primer and foundation from Huda Beauty a few days after its October 13th launch date.  If you bought the Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Foundation, inside the box came a sample of the primer.  This is how I ended up testing the primer without using the full size one.  The box packaging is very sleek, it has a similar texture to Nars' blush compacts.  It is black with magenta and white typography of the brand's name.  The actual packaging of the primer is in a black tube and it comes with a pump.  Nothing too fancy but it is decent so no complaints there.

Their claims of hydrating and nourishing are true.  The primer has a thick consistency, almost like a high-end skincare item such as a moisturizer.  Their claim of the primer gripping the skin is also true, however, this is where it all went wrong for me.  It was so tacky that using it with a thicker foundation such as the #FauxFilter foundation, the application went very patchy.  I used a different foundation with this primer (Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk) that has a thinner consistency and it was okay but definitely an effort to blend and get an even application.  This primer has a strong floral fragrance similar to the foundation so if you are sensitive to scents like myself, this may not be something for you.  It also clogged my pores (I have very small pores almost invisible) which caused my skin to break out.  I wonder if it is the floral fragrance ingredient that is causing the breakouts aside from its thick consistency.

As I mentioned in my review of the foundation, anything that breaks me out (along with a strong fragrance) is a no-go for me.  I won't be purchasing nor recommending this makeup base/primer.
